What are Vitamins and what do they do?
We all talk about the importance of them, but the world of Vitamins is more complex than just that. They’re essential nutrients that our bodies need to function properly and play a critical role in metabolism, immune function, energy production and overall health.
Unsurprisingly, they all do slightly different things. Some are “fat-soluble” which means that they are stored in fat tissue and some are “water-soluble” which means that they are not stored in the body and need regular intake from our diet or from other supplementation.
Fat-soluble Vitamins
Vitamin A – supports vision, immune function, skin health and cell growth
Vitamin D – helps calcium absorption, promoting bone health and immune support
Vitamin E – acts as an antioxidant, protects cells and support immune function
Vitamin K – essential for blood clotting and bone health
Water-Soluble Vitamins
Vitamin C – strengthens the immune system, supports skin and tissue repair and acts as an antioxidant
Vitamin B1 – helps convert food to energy and supports the nerve function.
Vitamin B2 – important for energy production and skin health
Vitamin B3 – supports digestion, skin health and cholesterol levels
Vitamin B5 – aids metabolism and hormone production
Vitamin B6 – supports brain development, immune function and metabolism
Vitamin B7 – helps maintain healthy hair, skin and nails
Vitamin B9 – essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell formulation (especially in pregnancy)
Vitamin B12 – vital for nerve function, red blood cell production and energy metabolism
Humans require all the above vitamins to function at their optimum level.
Supplementation is often used for specific purposes, such as:
- To prevent or treat deficiencies
- To support specific health goals
- For those with dietary restrictions (vegans may lack B12 for example)
- To compensate for nutrient depletion due to medical conditions, medications or lifestyle factors.
There’s one supplement however that everyone is generally recommended to take in the US and that’s Vitamin D. A deficiency in this can mean that you can’t absorb the calcium from food and so can lead to weakened bones. It’s found in foods such as oily fish, egg yolks, red meat, liver, mushrooms that have been grown in sunlight and fortified breakfast cereals or spreads, but it’s hard to get enough from your diet alone.
Our main source of Vitamin D is from sunshine, but especially in the winter months in many parts of the US you can’t get enough. Some people are at a higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency so should take a supplement all year round - these include people with darker skins, people who cover their skin fully when outside and those who spend a lot of time indoors.
